I arrived today in New Orleans, after a 6am flight from Santa Barbara and a connection in Denver. I ran into former schoolmate Greg Blascovich en route. He was on his way to an interview with the Denver Post, to discuss something about his fraternity. The plane left for New Orleans a little after 10, and I landed there at 1:40.
After waiting at the baggage carousel for a few hours and being told my luggage would not arrive until tomorrow, I hailed a taxi and was driven out to Common Ground.
We arrived some time after 3 in the 9th Ward, at the former St. Mary's Catholic school, now home to the Common Ground Collective.
I was given a tour by a young man named Erik. He showed me around the grounds, pointing out the Coucheteria (meeting place), kitchen, dishwashing room, dining room, sleeping quarters, and so on.
I really shouldn't be writing right now, I'm missing out on a meeting... so here are some pictures. I will be sleeping in the library, where there are many fun and interesting books (including one on feelings, which I spent some time reading earlier.)
I've run into a few people I know here, some from school (Jake and Peter from the newspaper, some from my gutting crew, etc), as well as Katie Murray, surprisingly, a friend of mine from high school who I haven't seen in years...
Sorry for the undetailed post... writing feels like a betrayal when I should be participating. So, who knows how often I'll update. Maybe I'll do all that when I get back. The computers are very sluggish (or maybe just this one.) For now, here are some pictures...
I'm very much looking forward to my time here.
